I began hiking in the mountains with my parents when I was five years old. At the age of eighteen I was fortunate to take part in a school trekking expedition to the Karakoram mountains of North Pakistan. That experience made me determined to travel as much as I possibly could, and I returned to the Indian Subcontinent on several occasions, and journeyed to the Middle East, Iceland and South America.Following trekking expeditions to Angel Falls in Venezuela, and to Pico da Neblina in Brazil, I had two travel articles published in Adventure Travel Magazine in the United Kingdom. In 2003 I was elected as a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG).In 2004 I took a break from travelling, to pursue another long-held ambition - learning to fly. I took my ground exams at Kemble Aerodrome (now Cotswold Airport) before travelling to Florida to do my flying training with Ormond Beach Aviation at Ormond Beach Municipal Airport.Having obtained my Private Pilots Licence (PPL) and Night Qualification in Florida, I returned to Cotswold Airport where I enjoyed flying single engine piston aeroplanes; renting them from The Flying Club Kemble. In August 2007, I passed my Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) Rating at Oxford Airport.I then returned to my passion for travelling, undertaking a fascinating solo tour of Iran in the autumn of 2008.The next year, I decided to qualify to teach English to the speakers of foreign languages (TEFL). I then went on to take a career break, and taught English in Central Java, Indonesia for a year, and Iskenderun in Turkey for seven months.Ever since I started travelling, my interest and enthusiasm for photography has grown. I am now a semi-professional photographer, and my images have been used by the BBC, Getty Images, the Daily Telegraph, the History Channel and others. I have diversified from purely travel photographs, and now capture wildlife, landscapes and studio portraits. Selected images are now available to buy or licence on my companion website at www.rowancastlephotography.com.I currently live in the Lake District in the UK, and continue to travel whenever I can.
